I had the wonderful opportunity of joining Director Wendy Harman and other preschool directors at the Hawaii Association for the Education of Young Children's conference on October 14, 2016. The conference opened with a keynote address by Senator Suzanne Chun Oakland who spoke about recent trends in early childhood education and possible ways of providing preschool education to more children. Director Harman and I then attended breakout sessions on the Department of Health initiatives and updates, legal issues associated with preschool employment, and engaging the children in reading readiness. The stimulating discussions and the chance to meet other educators provided such a valuable experience for this first-time participant.
As chairperson of the Moiliili Hongwanji Preschool Committee, I am happy to announce that we have a new member joining this committee. Temple member Ann Miyasaki has agreed to serve on this committee that oversees the policies and operations of the preschool. Other members include Mari Fukuya, Nancy Hironaka, Nancy Shimamoto, Rev. Bert Sumikawa, Wendy Harman, and teacher Jan Kuniyuki. Mrs. Kathryn Yoshida, unfortunately, could not continue as a member and co-chairperson of this committee. We are truly grateful for the commitment, contributions, and expertise she provided.
You may have noticed that the downstairs annex is going through some transformation. To preschool will be expanding its enrollment and the downstairs annex will once again be used for our students. Many thanks to Wes Henry and Kerry-sensei for spearheading this renovation.
Mahalo to everyone for supporting the Moiliili Hongwanji Preschool.
